Description

Seen here is a model-based reconstruction of life on a Permian forest floor. This is a public exhibit at Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This strange-looking reptile is a terrestrial predatory pelycosaur called Dimetrodon, which only lived during the Permian. It had hyperelongated vertebral spines that formed a prominent dorsal sail. The function of the sail is thought to be body temperature regulation and/or attracting mates.
