Summary

English: Dinner Plates Clouds like the ones just right of centre, like a stack of dinner plates, are the stuff of glider pilots' dreams. They mark standing waves formed when a strong wind is deflected upwards by a range of mountains. By getting into the rising part of the wave on the upwind edge of the cloud, a glider can climb from one to the next like a ladder, and can reach the same altitudes as a commercial jet airliner. The UK gliding height record stands at 11,570 metres (37,949 feet), and was achieved in wave similar to this. The grey roof just visible left of centre in the foreground is one of the Highland Gliding Club's hangars at Easterton Airfield. |
