Pictured here in his umpire's attire, William Dinneen (or Dineen) (1876-1955) had a 12-year major league pitching career with four teams, posting a win-loss record of 170-177. As a member of the Boston Americans in the inaugural 1903 World Series, Dinneen won three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, including the first two shutouts in series history. He won 65 games in his first three years in the majors, averaging over 300 innings pitched per year and a 2.49 ERA. In 1904, Dinneen threw an American League record 37 straight complete games, and set a second related record of 335 2/3 innings pitched without being relieved. In winning 23 games that year, he finished every game he started. After his playing career, Bill Dinneen was an American League umpire in 1909-1937. |
