English: Dike in rhyolitic metatuffs in the Silurian of Maine, USA.
Igneous dikes are planar intrusions that cut across country rocks. They vary in thickness and composition (felsic to mafic). The grayish-colored host rocks are part of a Upper Silurian volcanic succession called the Cranberry Island Series. It mostly consists of rhyolitic volcanic breccias, volcanic tuffs, and rhyolite lava flows. These are metamorphosed rhyolitic volcanic tuffs in the middle member of the series, which is the most voluminous of the three members.
