Description: The painting shows three wooden dry docks in the Dijksgracht. The one on the right is almost completely submerged, with a sailing ship about to enter. Before 1857, Reederij der Drijvende Droogdokken owned three dry docks. One in the Westerdok, and two in the Oosterdok, of which the Dijksgracht is part. These dry docks were too big to leave these wet docks.

In June 1857 the company Reederij der Drijvende Droogdokken acquired a fourth dry dock, which was significantly longer than the previous ones. The new dry dock would be the third in the Oosterdok. By the signature date, the painting shows the inauguration of this fourth wooden dry dock. It lifts a (longer!) steam powered ship, flying a flag on each mast in celebration.

Omschrijving: Het schilderij toont drie houten droogdokken in de Dijksgracht. Het meest rechtse is bijna helemaal afgezonken, met een zeilschip klaar om er in gaan. Voor 1857 had de Reederij der Drijvende Droogdokken drie houten droogdokken. Een in het Westerdok, en twee in het Oosterdok, waar de Dijksgracht deel van uitmaakt. Deze droogdokken waren overigens te groot om deze natte dokken te verlaten.

In June 1857 verkreeg de Reederij der Drijvende Droogdokken een vierde, significant groter, houten droogdok. Dit werd het derde droogdok in het Oosterdok. Van de signering valt af te leiden dat het schilderij de indienststelling van dit vierde houten droogdok afbeeldt. Dit is dan het meest linkse dok, dat een zeilschip met stoomvermogen drooggezet heeft. Omdat zeilschepen met stoomvermogen langer waren, is dit wat de rederij wilden laten zien. De vlaggen op het schip benadrukken de feestelijkheid.
