Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Shantinatha complex is a modern Jain temple. It has several ruins of lost Jain temples and artwork found near Sesai. Near the complex are remains of the Sultanate fort from 14th or 15th century.

Background:' Sesai, sometimes referred to as Sesai Sadak, is a village and a historic site in Shivpuri district of north Madhya Pradesh. The site is significant to both Hinduism and Jainism. It is at least 1,400 years old given the inscriptions as well as the Hindu and Jain artwork discovered here. It is related to other important heritage sites in Shivpuri district.

Sesai has the ruins of two Hindu temples and has been a source of much artwork scattered in its fields – these are of lost temples and a lost Hindu monastery. Of the surviving temples, one is a ruin of a beautifully carved Surya temple with some notable iconography and evidence that Hindu traditions such as Sauraism and Shaivism were closely linked in Indian history. The second surviving ruin is a mandapika-style Shiva temple. A large new complex of Jain temple co-exists with the two Hindu temple ruins. Historic Jain artwork ruins have also been found in Sesai.
