Summary

[edit]
Description
English: (~6.5 centimeters across at its widest)

Differential weathering and differential erosion are surface processes involving soft rocks weathering/eroding quickly and hard rocks weathering/eroding slowly. Different portions of rocks will weather and erode and different rates, depending on the durability and chemical reactivity of individual components (grains, minerals).

Seen here is siltstone, a common siliciclastic sedimentary rock. The elongated donut hole shape is merely from differential weathering and erosion.

Stratigraphic provenance: possibly from local Lower Mississippian siliciclastics (Cuyahoga Formation or Logan Formation)

Locality: loose clast from a Licking River gravel bar near Black Hand Gorge, eastern Licking County, east-central Ohio, USA
