The Tharsis region is a bulge more than four thousand meters high and is about the size of North America. It is located at the transition from the southern highlands to the northern lowlands.

Summary

[edit]
Description
Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS/MOLA; FU Berlin
English: The Tharsis region is a bulge more than four thousand meters high and is about the size of North America. It is located at the transition from the southern highlands to the northern lowlands. Its origin has not been finally clarified, but the volcanic and tectonic influence makes it seem likely that large magma bubbles rising from the planet's mantle have pressed like a stamp against the brittle crust from below over the course of Mars' history and raised Tharsis. Volcanoes and huge expansion structures were the result. In addition to the three striking Tharsis volcanoes (Tharsis Montes) and Olympus Mons, the huge volcanic complex Alba Patera also belongs to the Tharsis region. The color scale for this topographic map highlights the enormous differences in elevation compared to the surrounding area of Tharsis. The boxed box marks the area captured by Mars Express during orbit 25,000. Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS/MOLA; FU Berlin
