- und der Überfall mitten im Frieden erscheint ihm, falls es für England nützlich ist, als eine erlaubte Maßregel.
- Man tut unrecht, solche Regungen mit dem Wort „Egoismus“ abzutun. Kann doch überhaupt das Nationalgefühl in gewissem Sinne am ehesten nach dem Ausdruck der französischen Ethiker ein „erweiterter Egoismus“ genannt werden. Aber wie die egoistischen Motive in den einzelnen Menschen verschiedene Formen und Färbungen zeigen, je nachdem sie sich aus Besitz, Familie, Beruf, Stellung, persönliche Wertschätzung usw. beziehen, so ist auch der nationale Egoismus keineswegs bei jeder Nation derselbe. Die prägnantesten Unterschiede bieten hier wohl, wie überhaupt in ihrem Volkscharakter, der Franzose und der Engländer. Jener fühlt sich überall als Mittelpunkt der Gesellschaft, und aus seiner Umgebung strahlt ihm das gleiche wohlgefällige Bild zurück, das er von sich selber hat, und das die Liebenswürdigkeit steigert, mit der er andern begegnet. Besitzt er die Ehrenlegion, so trägt er womöglich das Band am Schlafrock. Sein Ehrgeiz ist sozusagen „zentrifugal“: er strahlt von seinem Ich auf seine Familie, seine Vaterstadt, schließlich auf die ganze Nation aus. Ganz anders der Engländer. Ein bekanntes Sprichwort lautet: „my house is my castle“, und es kommt in einer noch bezeichnenderen Variante vor: „my country is my world“. In seinem Haus fühlt er sich geborgen und weist rücksichtslos jeden hinaus, den er nicht eingeladen hat, einzutreten; und sein Land, dieses stolze, meerbeherrschende England, ist seine Welt, es überträgt auf ihn etwas von der Macht und Herrschaft, die ihm nach seiner Meinung gebührt. Sein Nationalgesühl ist „zentripetal“. Gewiß würde es schwer zu sagen sein, in welchem dieser Gefühle mehr Egoismus steckt.
