- Descartes seinerzeit noch nichts wußte, gerecht zu werden sucht.
- So wenig aber auch Descartes in Frankreich selbst einen ebenbürtigen Nachfolger gefunden, so würde man ihm und der französischen Philosophie doch nicht gerecht werden, wollte man den Wert verkennen, den sich diese um die geistige Kultur der Welt erworben hat. Vermöge ihrer großen Fähigkeit klarer Gedankenentwicklung ist sie zum erstenmal in weite Kreise der Gebildeten gedrungen und hat damit die Philosophie überhaupt zu einem Bestandteil allgemeiner Bildung gemacht. Man muß Molières „Femmes savantes“ lesen, um eine Vorstellung von dem philosophischen Interesse zu gewinnen, das dereinst Descartes' Schriften in weiten Kreisen erregten; und mag dieses Interesse an der Philosophie dann und wann zurückgetreten sein, ganz erloschen ist es seitdem niemals. Man halte dagegen den Anteil, den in den vorangegangenen Zeiten auch der relativ gebildete Laie etwa an den Diskussionen der mönchischen Gelehrsamkeit über die Frage, ob die Begriffe Wirklichkeiten oder bloße Namen seien, ob die Unterschiede der Individuen auf der Materie oder auf der Form beruhten, usw. nehmen konnte! Wohl war auf dem neuen Wege teilweise schon Italien, auch England vorangegangen, aber ganz hat doch die Aufgabe, die Philosophie zum Gegenstand der allgemeinen Bildung zu machen, erst Frankreich gelöst. Dazu kommt ein zweites Verdienst. Die französische Philosophie hat es zum erstenmal verstanden, klar und deutlich die Probleme zu stellen, die von da an das moderne Denken bewegen. Sie hat diese Probleme nicht gelöst, ja sie hat zu den relativen Lösungen, um die sich die kommenden Generationen bemühten, selbst wenig beigetragen. Aber es gibt Zeiten in der Geschichte der Wissenschaft, in denen die genaue Formulierung der Fragen eine entscheidende Bedeutung besitzt; und eine solche Zeit war die erste Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts,
