Das älteste Schioss, der Sitz der Herren de Benrode, die 1222 zuerst erwähnt 1 BauWerden (München, Staatsbibliothek, Sammelband Redinghoven XLII, p. 255; 1224 beiKrem er, Akad. Beitr. II, S. 252), lag an der Stelle der jetzigen Kaserne und ging schon im 13. Jh. an die Grafen von Berg über, es diente im 15. Jh. mehrfach als Leibzucht und Wittum, aber auch als Pfandobjekt und wurde wahrscheinlich im dreissigjährigen Kriege zerstört. Im f. 1660 überwies Pfalzgraf Philipp Wilhelm Benrath seiner Gemahlin, der Pfalz- 2 Haugräfin Elisabeth Amalie Magdalena, die dort in den J. 1662 —1666 ein neues Schioss e* 83 84 KREIS DÜSSELDORF

84 BENRATH 85 errichten Hess, das einige hundert Schritt hinter dein jetzigen Bau mitten in dein Schlotlangen Weiher lag. Der neue Schlossbau litt indessen in Folge von Feuchtigkeit und Brand so, 3 Bau dass er bald unbewohnbar wurde. Kurfürst Karl Theodor Hess daher das Schloss im Weiher abbrechen und am Ende des Weihers im J. 1755 ein neues Palais errichten, dessen Bau der einfallenden Kriegsjahre des siebenjährigen und des Erbfolgekriegeshalber gegen 20 Jahre in Anspruch nahm und über 800000 Thaler kostete. Um die grossartigen projektierten Wasserwerke zu speisen, ward der Itterbach durch einen eigenen Kanal vom Kloster Noven nach dem Park geleitet. Das Schloss diente Karl Theodor und seiner Gemahlin als Sommeraufenthalt, nach ihm nur noch Joachim Murat und dem Erbprinzen Leopold von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen als Wohnung.
