Summary

[edit]
Description

The Palestinians in Gaza call the situation The Great Right of Return March. They want to return to their homeland which they lost to Israel during 'The Nakba' or catastrophe. During the war in 1947-1949 thousands of Jews and Palestinian Arabs died and thousands of Palestinians became permanent refugees.

Today, the Gaza Strip is often referred to as the world's largest open air prison. Two million people live a precarious and extremely dangerous existence there. Hamas controls everything they do. Israel controls all access to the strip including air, land and seat routes. Unemployment levels are around 60% of able bodied males. Some Gazans only have four hours of electricity per day.

So the people are marching towards the border wall that encloses them. Israeli soldiers shoot women, children, members of the press wearing identifying vests, nurses trying to help the wounded, even an 8 month old child who pose a threat to Israeli citizens or cross the border without documentation. The soldiers use rubber bullets that explode on contact causing at times severe injury.

Yet still these people march towards the border wall. They want their freedom and to live with dignity and opportunity again. So far around 123 people have been shot dead and hundreds more wounded.
