esting school. S. B. TISOIO, Antonio da, lived in Belluno in the16th century, and is the author of a mutilatedaltar-piece in the church of Orzes, representing the Virgin and Child between SS. John the Baptist,Andrew, Sebastian, and Michael, signed and dated1512. It has been suggested that he is identicalwith Antonio da Cesa. Other works : Belluno. Casa Pacjani. Virgin and Child. „ Conte Ayosti. Three Fragments, each with an Angel upon it. TISSIER, Jean Baptiste Ange, a French por-trait and historical painter, ^vas born in Paris in1814. He studied in the Ecole des Beaux Arts,under Ary Scheffer and Paul Delaroche. His worksappeared at the Salon from 1838 to 1876. He diedin Paris in the latter year. Several of his portraitsare at Versailles, notably one of Abd-el-Kader. TISSOT, Am^dee Angelot, a French landscapepainter, who exhibited water-colour views at theSalon between 1835—1845. He died in 1867. TISSOT, James Joseph Jaques, was born atNantes in 183G, and was the pupil of Lamolte.

\ 1^ s 3 $ PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. He made his d^but at tbe Salon in 1859 with fourfigures of saints, designs for a stained-glass windowto the memory of his parents in a church in hisnative town. In 1861 he exhibited at the Salonhis Meeting between Faust and Marguerite, whichwas bought by the French Government. Thisfine work was succeeded by paintings of con-temporary subjects, chiefly groups of typical Frenchwomen, amongst which those known as LaFemme a Paris were specially admired for theirskilful draughtsmanship. Of a genial tempera-ment, James Tissot was for many years verypopular in the art world of Paris, but after theFranco-German War, in which he fought bravely,he went to London, where he took up his residencein St. Johns Wood. Whilst in England he paintedmany clever genre pictures, some of which wonhim the commendation of Ruskin, who admiredtheir dexterity, brilliancy, and conscientiousness,but deprecated what he called their vulgarity ofsubject.
