On coming out we thought wesaw in the crowd our friend the French offi-cer of Matamoras. It seemed so unlikelythat we dismissed the idea as being improb-able. In the course of a few days we foundout that we were not mistaken, as he was theman who had been looking so long at Belle,and followed us to our hotel. The next dayhe came to the hotel and bribed Jack (myhusbands valet) to tell him our plans; onhearing that we were looking for an apart-ment, he gave Jack the address of one, andtold him to be sure and have us go to lookat it. When he went home to his mother, heinformed her that an American family werecoming to look at the apartment that shewanted to let, and that she must allow themto have it on their own terms as it meanteverything to him and his fut
