It was likely painted in India during the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (1605–27), who was an avid collector and connoisseur. Jahangir collected European paintings, and was particularly interested in religious, allegorical and mythological scenes. Believing his court artists to be as accomplished as European painters, he ordered them to copy several European paintings – it is likely that this folio was among those meant to prove the skill of his court atelier. |
