Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Diamond-Atwill House, 300 Depew Avenue at Parker Avenue, Buffalo, New York, April 2022. Built in 1963 on the erstwhile site of the Henry May House, a spacious Colonial Revival mansion that had been demolished eighteen years earlier after the death of its owner, the Diamond-Atwill House was designed by architect George Reiss, whose eclectic mix of various substrains of Modernism is highlighted by a cross-gabled roof with widely projecting eaves, enormous floor-to-ceiling windows on the Depew Avenue façade looking into a cathedral-ceilinged living room, and an understated entrance tucked next to an oddly placed chimney stack. Reiss had at first intended it as the home of his own family, but later sold the property to food scientist-turned-Rich Products vice president Holton Whittier "Rex" Diamond (1915-1971), whose patents were the basis for the "Coffee Rich" non-dairy creamer that brought the onetime consortium of local dairies to national prominence. Diamond lived in the house until his acrimonious departure from the company only three years later. An even more prominent later resident was Louise Atwill née Weigel (1912-1982), a former championship figure skater who was a two-time silver medalist in the U.S. championships and a competitor in the 1932 and '36 Winter Olympics. She lived in the house with her husband, businessman Edward Atwill, until her death.
