Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Dey Mansion is located in Passaic County, New Jersey. This historic site served as General George Washington's headquarters during July, October, and November of 1780. It was placed on the New Jersey Register of Historic places on September 11, 1970 and on the National Register of Historic Places on December 18, 1970. The house was provided to General Washington and his staff to serve as a base by Theunis Dey and his wife Hester. Theunis Dey served as a colonel of the Militia in Bergen County. Dey had much in common with Washington, such as that they both were large land owners, agriculturalists, and served in the governments of their respective states. The location of the house was strategic for Washington and his forces due to its close proximity to the Passaic Falls. The position of the mansion allowed greater access to food and forage. The significance of the mansion as a military base during the revolutionary war is attested to in the Washington papers at the Library of Congress. In the modern era, the mansion is located in the Township of Wayne.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 70000392.
