Mayster Ratliffe's banner, depicting a man-tyger (manticore)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lord Fitzwater (Filtzwalter)'s (Henry Radclyffe's) banner, i.e., perhaps that of John, 9th Baron Firzwater, father of en:Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex. depicting a man-tyger purpure, wearing a yellow cap, turned up ermine. Feet have been described as humanlike or monkey-like. The elbow armor called "garbralles" by the editor (en:vambraces perhaps a more familiar term) in silver is a repeated motif. A chronicler (in MS. Cotton) said the device seen on (this) Lord Fitzwater, when he accompanied Henry VIII to France, was a "Babyon" (baboon), which also had "elbow gards" as motif.
