town subsequentlyspringing up at the mouth would be called Plymouth. Butthe real name of the river (into which the Meavy falls atShaugh Bridge) is probably the Cad, as is shown by Cadover(Cadaford) Bridge above the junction, and by Catwater,Catdown, at the rivers mouth. It is noticeable that neitherPlympton nor Plymstock is on the Plym, but a mile or twooff it in each case ; the one being near the northern, theother near the southern, head of the lake. A. Croft. 169. Breage, Helston.—In making a copy of theBurial Registers of this parish, I find in the year 1578there were 76 burials, and in the year 1597 51 burials. The average number of burials registered in normal yearsis a little over 20. I should be obliged if any of the readersof D. &> C. N. &> Q. could give me any information as toepidemics or a visitation of the plague in South-WestCornwall in the years 1578 and 1597 to account for theremarkable number of burials in this parish in these years. Devon and Cornwall Notes and Queries. 177 170. Seventeenth Century Stained Glass in UptonPyne Church.—The remains of what must have beenformerly an extensive collection of this glass have beenremoved from three windows in the south aisle of thischurch and in the Vicarage hall and reassembled in awindow to the east of the south door, their arrangementbeing shown by the accompanying photographs. Manysmall fragments, too shattered for restoration, have beenutilized as borders to the light enclosing six larger panels.Of these, one, in the lower half of the centre light, iscomparatively modern, dating only from the earlier half ofthe nineteenth century: it displays Stafford quarteringNorthcote with the hand of Ulster, sign of baronetcy, ona small central escutcheon. The other panels, as shown by the larger photographs, are extremely quaint and full of interest. All are of eitherDutch or Flemish workmanship, and the oval heraldicmedallion, which bears date 1630, is probably the mostrecent
