After the death of Frederik II in 1588, Denmark was ruled by a regency while the Crown Prince Christian (IV) came of age. Legend has it that on his deathbed in 1594, Chancellor Niels Kaas gave Crown Prince Christian the keys to the vaults of Copenhagen Castle, where the Danish Crown Regalia were kept.
