Español: Detalle de Cielo en Pompeya; que es la única ciudad antigua cuya estructura topográfica se conoce de forma precisa, sin modificaciones posteriores. No estaba distribuida en un plano regular como solía ocurrir con las ciudades romanas, debido a la irregularidad del terreno. Pero sus calles eran rectas y formaban una rejilla al más puro estilo romano, con su cardo y dos decumanos. El sector sudoeste, no obstante, presenta un trazado muy irregular, y es el núcleo original del asentamiento osco, al que se le fueron añadiendo las diversas ampliaciones con un trazado mucho más regular. El trazado de la muralla ya estaba definido en el siglo VI a.C. y probablemente también el de las principales calles, aunque incluso en el año 79 permanecían en la ciudad, especialmente en el sector oriental, numerosos descampados y cultivos, que muestran que el espacio intramuros nunca estuvo muy densamente poblado.
Los nombres actuales de las calles, puertas y edificios de la ciudad datan en su mayoría del siglo XVIII o XIX, ya que muchos no tenían nombre concreto durante la época romana, y en otros casos no se ha conservado. Se sabe tan solo que la actual Vía de la Abundancia debió llamarse Via Pompeiana y cruzaba la Via Jovia (de Júpiter) y la Via Dequviaris, que no se han identificado. En cuanto a las puertas, la actual Puerta de Herculano llevaba el nombre de Porta Salis o Saliniensis y la Puerta Marina se llamaba probablemente Porta Forensis. Actualmente para localizar los edificios en el plano se usa el sistema ideado por Giuseppe Fiorelli, que dividió la ciudad en 9 regiones, cada una de ellas con un número identificativo para cada manzana y, dentro de cada manzana, para cada puerta. |
