Title
detail of decoration on hook plate
Description
English: Hook plate from a book clasp made from a flat rectangular piece of copper alloy. These clasps were attached to leather straps fixed to the book and helped to hold the book shut by hooking into a corresponding catch-piece on the other side. The end of the hook plate is flared with three incisions to form a serrated back edge. This end has a rivet hole, with an engraved circle around it, to attach the plate to a leather strap. The opposite end is bent over to form a single central flat hook, 8 mm wide, beyond a square shaped (in plan) terminal. The upper face of the hook plate is decorated with an engraved rose in the centre of the plate and a decorative band of engraved triangles in the form of a zigzag running across the width of the plate towards the hook end. There are three triangles and within each is a trefoil. On the other side of the border is a band of five fleurets, which run parallel to the terminal and about 2 mm away from its end.
Read (1995) has a hook plate with similar decoration on page 80, No.473, which he dates from the 13th to 17th centuries.
Bailey (1995) has a hook plate with similar decoration on page 72, No.9, which he dates from the 15th to 17th centuries.
