Our Christchurch office and Ngāi Tahu have been collaborating in the digitisation of the early survey maps of the Canterbury Land District since 2012. The maps document what the environment looked like prior to large-scale European settlement showing rivers, mountains, vegetation and tracks. Having started small, the project has grown to include ECan and LINZ, and has extended to the Westland, Nelson and Marlborough Land Districts. To view the digitised maps, go to www.archway.archives.govt.nz, choose advanced search and then enter the relevant series number in the series search box (23142 for Canterbury, 23143 for Marlborough, 23144 for Nelson, or 23145 for Westland). To navigate around a map with your mouse, set the map to full screen view using the button on the left of the zoom buttons. Pictured here is part of a c.1860s plan of the Wanganui River Valley, showing a written dialogue between the surveyor and draughtsman.
