Description

Detail of the Sacred Heart in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the north transept at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

The chapel was created during the 1946-1948 reconstruction of the cathedral. Artists working for Rambusch Decorating Company of New York City designed the chapel; designed and manufactured the sculptures of Christ, St. John the Evangelist, and the pietà; and designed and painted the mural.

The statue of Christ holding His sacred heart stands in a niche in the north wall. A mural depicting the Apocalypse surrounds the niche. The mural depicts the trumpets, seals, and bowls; the Four Horsemen; and the Woman of the Apocalypse and the Dragon With Seven Heads.

Above the Sacred Heart niche is the rose window of the north transept, whose centerpiece is the Hand of God.

On the west wall of this chapel is another niche containing a pietà. (This is not a replica of Michelangelo's famous work, although it is similar.) Above and to the left of the pietà niche is a statue of St. John the Evangelist. The apostle, who wrote the fourth gospel and the Book of Revelation, is depicted as an aged man with a white or gray beard. He holds a quill (representing his authorship of the gospel) and a chalice (representing the Apocryphal story that John drank poison and survived as a sign of his faith). The heraldic "Eagle of St. John" is painted above the niche.
