Notes Presidential chair and table presented to the Auckland Savage Club in 1908 by Savage WJ Rainger. Entertainment clubs, modeled on the Savage Club in London flourished in most New Zealand cities and towns in the period 1880-1950. Called Savage Clubs or the kindred Orphan's Clubs, they provided an outlet for the performance of drama and music. The savage motif 'Bohemmianism' and late Victorian attitudes are evident in the club's activities. They are an important aspect of the amateur music and theatre culture of the times. The Club's ritual is based on Maori culture. For example, the leader, or rangatira, wears a cloak. Other members of the tribe or hapu include ariki and tohunga. The Club's meetings are called korero, and the decorations of the Club also borrow from Maori culture. (ref.
