The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat I haven't had the pleasure of going inside either this building or the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, but I would like to! Both are designed by Fumihiko Maki. I really like Maki's clean lines and use of vast open spaces, and also the way that while not 'natural' necessarily in appearance, the building fits so beautifully in its space. Each time I walk by this building I admire it. I have read that it is open to the public... perhaps one day I'll see if access is possible. --- “The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat was established by His Highness the Aga Khan, 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). A secular facility, the Delegation serves a representational role for the Imamat and its institutions, offering a centre for building relationships, enabling quiet diplomacy, disseminating knowledge and information, while reflecting the wide-ranging humanistic and humanitarian agenda of the AKDN. Designed by award-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, the building opened in December 2008. The design emerges from the Aga Khan’s belief that architecture is not simply about buildings, but about the quality of life of those that inhabit the built environment. The Delegation has received the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture (2012), and two awards from the Ontario Association of Architects: the Celebration of Excellence Award and People’s Choice Award (2010). About the architect: Fumihiko Maki is the principal architect of Tokyo-based Maki and Associates. Maki’s world-renowned work includes the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto; the TEPIA Science Pavilion in Tokyo; the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts in San Francisco; the World Trade Centre Tower 4 and the UN Consolidation Building in New York City; the Media Arts and Science Building at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto (completed in 2018). The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat was Maki’s first Canadian commission. A secular facility, the Delegation serves a representational role for the Imamat and its institutions, offering a centre for building relationships, enabling quiet diplomacy, disseminating knowledge and information, while reflecting the wide-ranging humanistic and humanitarian agenda of the AKDN.”
