English: Design for Organ Shutters, right side, parts 3 & 4. Pen and ink and brush over preliminary chalk drawing, brown and grey wash, Kunstmuseum Basel.
3. Virgin and Child with Angels Making Music, 37.9 (left), 30.9 (right) × 22.3 cm 4. St Pantalus, 29.4 (left), 29.5 (right) × 8 cm Organ shutters protected the organ from dust and dirt. Here, the central panels and side panels would have been connected by a hinge (Müller, 346–51). Holbein deploys perspective and illusion, particularly noticeable in St Pantalus's arm, to offset the angles and height of the shutters' positions. St Pantalus was the legendary first bishop of Basel. According to tradition, he was martyred with St Ursula and her followers at Cologne (Müller, 228). Holbein also portrayed him in a design for a stained glass window. |
