a porta della città, dal lato di oc-cidente, detta comunemente Ercolanese, continuava ilsuo cammino uscendo dalla prima porta appellata Sta-biana, e dalla seconda posta di fronte a Nuceria, e cheforse vi conduceva direttamente. La quale via nel trattointermedio tra Ercolano e Pompei, non poteva alloradenominarsi Domitia, come si è creduto, poiché taleappellativo venne dato al solo ramo dellAppia, che daSinuessa portava a Pozzuoli, dopo essere stato rifattoe selciato da Domiziano nel suo xvn. consolato. La notizia dei monumenti e delle case che sincon-trano in questa via , nel tratto che precede la settimaporta di Pompei, detto dei sepolcri , ed erroneamentecreduto appartenere al pago Augusto Felice Suburbano,si troverà dopo la descrizione di tutti gli edifizi scopertifinora nelle nove Regioni, in un capitolo destinato allaindicazione delle strade, che uscendo dalle porte dellacittà menavano ai paesi vicini. 27 REGIONE PRIMA O R T A S T A B I A N A J (20 mgg. 1851 —13 mrz. 1852)

Oltrepassata la colonnetta milliaria , che segnava ilconfine del territorio pompeiano verso Stabia, incontra-vasi una via , che conduceva direttamente a Pompei,detta dai Sanniti via pumpaiiana, e da essi lastricataessendo edili M. Suttio e N. Pontio; la quale fu poi, acagione della sua vetustà, rafforzata a proprie spese daiduumviri L. Avianio Fiacco e Q. Spedio Firmo. Al suo termine era la Porta Stabiana, la prima e lapiù antica di tutte quelle che davano accesso alla città,costruita in grandi massi di pietra sarnense, e con lan-drone coverto da volta, oggi restaurata ; innanzi allaquale era la stazione dei cisiarii, o conduttori dei vei-coli, che per pattuita mercede trasportavano i viandantiai paesi vicini. Un cippo di travertino situato presso 28 REGIONE PRIMA 1 angolo orientale della Porta (e), queste cose ricordacon la seguente epigrafe : L-AVIANIVS • L • F • MEN FLACCVS • PONTIANVS QlSPEDIVS-QjF-MENfirmvs • ìiviri • d • viama milliario • ad • gisiariosqva
