et, and here thetraveler crosses the dividing line between Alberta andBritish Columbia, where the mountain stream flowsin both directions, to find its way either into theSaskatchewan and into Hudson Bay, or into theKootenay and Columbia rivers and the Pacific. After passing Summit Lake theCrows Nest— railway descends the valley of Mich-Alt. 4,410 ft. el Creek, and threads its way alongthe steep side hill of the mountainwhich towers far above to the left, while to the right, hundreds of feet below, the Michel is seen like a thinsilver thread, winding and twisting in and out as ithurries along to join the Elk river. Then comes theLoop, where the line makes some amazing turnsand twists until finally after turning up and crossingthe south branch of the Michel, it doubles back towithin a stones throw of itself, and by looking up-wards one can clearly discern the railway cutting along gash in the mountain directly overhead. Threemiles are covered to make this distance of less than200 feet.

Coal again appears propping out beyond theLoop. Michel Sparwood Hosmer Fernie— Is a thriving town built in the heart of the mountains and surrounded bydensely wooded flat-topped hills and ridges.Morrissey Elko— Two-and-a-half miles east of Elko, Alt. 3,040 ft. the line crosses the*Elk River, whichcontinues on its southward courseto join the Kootenay. About a mile below the cross-ing is the Elk River Canyon, which extends severalmiles, in which the water drops 600 feet in seething, foaming masses. The scenery is wild and the en-vironments are grandly beautiful. Here the travelergets a last glimpse of the projecting angles, loftypeaks and fro wning precipices,
