78 ASSOCIATED SEED GROWERS, INC. SPINACH The time from planting to cutting of marketable plants varies considerably with the season of the year in which sowings are made. The accompanying schedule applies to spring planting in the Northern States. Spinach was developed from a wild plant in Central Asia. Days from sow. ing to cutting Blight Resistant Savoy (Virginia Savoy) 39 A Savoy-leaved sort, bred at the Virginia Experiment Station for mosaic resistance. Upstanding, A'igorous plants; seeding rather early; highly desirable for planting in infested soil. Leaves somewhat smoother than other strains of Savov. Bloomsdale Savoy, Reselected A first early, vigorous variety, desirable for local gardens, for shipping to distant markets, and for canning. Plant erect in growth, uniform, hardy and attractive. Leaves large, crumpled, somewhat blistered; dark glossy green. Seeds fairly early. BLOOMSDALE SAVOY, LONG STANDING Only a few days later than the regular Bloomsdale Savoy, it holds twelve to fourteen days longer before throwing seed stalks. Plant is very uniform and sturdy, with very attractive, highly crumpled and blistered dark green leaves. Exceptionally valuable for home and market gardens, and for shipping from the extreme South. Darkie A new European introduction of high quality; hardy and well adapted to fall planting; a slow seeder. Leaves large, smooth, very thick with intense dark green color. An attractive variety for gardeners and shippers. GIANT NOBEL or GIANT THICK LEAVED A recent European introduction of high merit. Very A'aluable for market gardens and canning. Plant large, vigorous, and spreading; slow to form seed stalks, and an extremely heavy yielder. Leaves very large, thick, smooth, pointed, with rounded tip; deep green, tender. The best of the Thick Leaved sorts. 39 42 45 45
