ches, breadth eleven inches, heightfive inches, and having a circumferenceof thirty-five inches and hollowed to adepth of one and one-half inches. It is very carefully wrought and fine-ly finished. Just below the rim, fol-lowing the complete circumference is agroove which may have been for orna-mentation or more likely to carry acord or wire to which were attachedmeans for suspension. The outer con-tours would indicate that, as there isno flat surface for it to rest upon. At the front or narrow part of theoval is a lip slightly hollowed from therim which probably carried the wick,and running back therefrom to the hol-low of the bowl in a straight line, is agroove. Beneath the lip and lookingtoward it is a human face in relief sug-gesting the sun or source of light. Nearthe rear of the bowl there rises fromthe bottom a Buddha-like figure withforearms and hands extended along thesurface toward the lip or light andwith gaze fixed upon it. 32 ALASKA HISTORICAL MUSEUM in groups of three, are relief imageshaving animal heads resembling thejackal or dog, with necks extendinginto the bowl and with human armsand legs on the outside. This vessel was turned up in plowingby Mr. Charles Ulanky on June 15,1913, while breaking virgin soil on hishomestead, on Fish Creek, about fourmiles from Knik, Cook Inlet, Alaska.It was found at a depth of about onefoot. At the same time and place Mr.Ulanky uncovered several skeletons andsmall trinkets, which led him to believethe place to be the site of an old Indianvillage or burying place. The vesselis clearly not of Aleut, or Eskimo craftas neither of these peopb have beenknown to produce any utensils resem-bling this.
