[edit]DescriptionDerailed wagons after a railway accident at Ruatangata near Whangarei, 1923. ATLIB 293674.png |
English: View of derailed wagons after a railway accident at Ruatangata near Whangarei in February 1923. The photographer's wife, Laura Godber, is standing by the wreckage. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber. Ruatangata was the name for the northern part of Kamo. News report from Whangarei, February 10, 1923. Yesterday afternoon twelve trucks at the rear of a train were derailed close to Ruatangata station, and went over the bank, being badly smashed. The guard’s van was derailed, but remained upright alongside the track. The trucks were laden with coal and limestone. The couplings snapped behind the seventh truck from the engine, automatically stopping the fore part of the train, which remained on the line. Traffic was delayed for four hours, pending repairs. Two passengers in the guard's van escaped, except for minor injury to one. |
