Notes The centre panel on the upper cover has a portrait of Luther. The panel on the lower cover shows a portrait of Melanchthon. Macchi states; Bound by Thomas Stelbogen for Nikolaus von Ebeleben in Leipzig in 1559. When von Ebeleben's library was sold, it contained about 400 editions, mainly works especially bound for him which he had acquired in France and Italy. The bindings are dated and show how the "Grolier style" arrived in Bologna through students and scholars. After his return to Germany, he asked his German binders to decorate the covers of his books according to the French and Italian fashion, e.g. a binding produced by Jakob Weidlich from Dresden on a Luther text, vol. I-VI. The remaining vols X-XII, however, were decorated in a typically German Renaissance style. In Ebeleben's library, bindings were more valuable than their texts. (M. von Arnim, Einbandkunst, n. 53).
