Summary

It is a very old crater that has already been severely leveled by erosion. Due to their immense dimensions, such large craters are also referred to as impact basins. Cassini's bowl-shaped depression is filled with layers of sediment several kilometers thick, and the rim of the crater, which was two to three kilometers high, is already severely degraded. Scientific research indicates that what was once the Cassini Basin depression was covered by standing water, as is believed to be the case with some of the craters in the area. The amount of water in the Cassini crater would have been about the same as that of Lake Baikal in Siberia, the largest freshwater reservoir on Earth.
