c/n 334 Designed from the outset as a racer and powered by a 160hp Gnome Lambda 14-cylinder two-row rotary, Monocoques won both the 1912 and 1913 Gordon Bennett Trophy races. More significantly, the type also held the world air speed record between January 1912 and (officially) 1920. Initially, Jules Védrines raised the record from its previous 83mph to 88mph, then beat his own record six times to leave it at 108mph in September 1912. In June 1913, Maurice Prévost would raise the speed to 112mph before reaching 127mph in September that year. This record officially stood throughout the First World War and was not finally broken until February 1920. This original example was built for the 1914 racing season but probably never flew. It is on display in the Pioneers Hall. Musée de l'air et de l'espace. Le Bourget Airport, Paris, France. 12th July 2022 |
