Summary
[edit]DescriptionDepartment of Nasty Jobs -- Leech Collectors (51038121246).jpg |
Both doctors and quacks used the blood-sucking creatures to treat a number of ailments, ranging from headaches to "hysteria." The leech collectors, usually poor country women, used themselves as human traps. They would wade into dirty ponds in the hope of attracting leeches. Unsurprisingly, leech collectors often suffered from excess blood loss and infectious diseases. -- Wellcome Library Illustration by George Walker, 1814 |
