Summary
[edit]DescriptionDenver & Rio Grande Railway - 49 caboose 1 (22114139193).jpg |
This small wooden caboose was built in 1881 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway, an early narrow gauge railroad. It was later renumbered # 0548. In 1938, the caboose was sold and taken to the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, where it saw use as a bunkhouse at a gold placer mine along the Animas River. The dilapidated remains of the caboose were noticed in 1981 in Durango, Colorado. The Colorado Railroad Museum of Golden, Colorado acquired the caboose in 1984 and has since restored the car to its original condition.
