Summary
[edit]DescriptionDenton Village, Gravesend, Kent, England.jpg |
English: Denton, near Gravesend, Kent, England. Although the postcard says Denton Village, given the present topography, old listed houses existing and a pub sign that should hang from an angled arm, it certainly couldn't be the Denton near Canterbury. From Google Earth and personal knowledge of two UK Dentons, it appears to fit no other Denton in the UK; the best bet being that this is Gravesend. Denton here was a parish with a few scattered houses between the villages and parishes of Chalk at the east, and Milton at the west. All these areas have been completely absorbed into a redeveloped and expanded Gravesham Borough conurbation. If I am right, the pub sign at the right was likely for the 'Ship and Lobster', the only pub in Denton. However, if the present pub of the same name is on the same site as this, the picture would show Marks Lane, now part of an industrial estate, with the Thames immediately to the right of the picture. The present pub faces the Thames. The whole thing is conjecture and very confusing, especially as the strong light would be coming from the north-ish, which could be unlikely. Any help on this would be useful. Other possible Denton's, those not today part of urban conurbations, and which seem to have the right road orientation based on the probable east to southwest light source, are Denton in Norfolk, and Denton in Northamptonshire. |
