No. 69 HIGHLAND LANDSCAPE AND SHEEP BY MLLE. ROSA BONHEUR No. 69 MLL.E. MARIE ROSA BONHEUR FRENCH (1822-1899) HIGHLAND LANDSCAPE AND SHEEP This picture shows to great advantage the wonderful ability of the artist, not only in her intimate knowledge and consummate rendering of animallife but also her powers as a landscape painter, especially in the wilder andmore remote aspects of nature. She shows us the dark, still waters of amountain loch in Scotland, surrounded by craggy hills, and steep moorlanddescending sheer to the waters edge. In the foreground the shore of thelake is rocky and covered with purple heather, on which rest a few of theactive, long-haired sheep of the country. Peacefully they lie, the ewes andtheir lambs, guarded by one of their number, who watches from a low, flat-topped rock. The sky is misty and heavy with vapor, which drifts downthe mountainside, concealing the farther peaks from view, giving promiseof heavy rain to come. Signed at the longer left, Rosa Bonhkur
