Theexternal and internal nasal processes, on the otherhand, only unite along a small portion of theirextremities, the openings thus left between be-coming eventually the anterior orifices of thenostrils. The portion of the fronto-nasal processwhich lies between these openings next growsforwards to form the nose, the openings them-selves gradually changing their direction, andapproaching nearer to each other, while the ex-ternal nasal processes are brought forward toform the lateral walls of the organ. While these processes are going on superficially,a series of deeper changes is in progress, by meansof which the common bucco-nasal cavity becomespartitioned off into the nasal fossae and the mouth.The separation of the two nasal fossse from eachother is provided for by the growth downwardsof the deep portion of the fronto-nasal process.This structure, which is at first short, thick, andbut very slightly prominent, gradually becomesthinner as it grows down into the bucco-nasal
