| Description |
English: Defending the town This is one of the eight 9lb guns that were supplied to defend the town following an attack by an American privateer in 1779. They were not manned until 1794 when some invalid artillerymen were deployed to train local volunteers in their use - and due to them, a few shots across the bows of the French ships that nosed into the bay on 22nd February 1797 were all that was needed to persuade the fleet's commander Colonel Tate (also American!) that they should retreat and attempt landing further west.
Four guns remain at the fort now, several having been scattered around the locality. One was returned from Fishguard High School a few years ago owing to the efforts of late history teacher Billy Fowler. |
