Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Deer Abbey Ruins. The abbey lies on the north bank of the South Ugie Water. It is said to have been founded by St Columba himself in the 6th Century by St Columba but these Cistercian Abbey stone ruins date from 1219. It is most famous for its Book of Deer, an illuminated 9th Century Latin volume which also has the earliest known Gaelic script. The book is now held in Cambridge University Library.
