English: Dedication on the monument to James Long A342 south-east of Devizes The inscription reads:
Qui coluere coluntur An: Dom: 1771 This Monument from a general Senfe of Gratitude was erected to the Memory of JAMES LONG Late of Wedhampton Esqr.Whofe publick Spirit & Benevolence which he ever exercifed for the fervice of Mankind were remarkably exerted in planning promoting and compleating this New Road An: Dom: 1768 By which a former tedious, and dangerous Way over the adjacent Hill is avoided To the great Pleafure and convenience of Travellers. In Recto Decus. The inscription is typical of late 18th century typography with the occasional use of 'f' for 's' in seemingly random fashion and the capitalising of nouns as in modern German. |
