English: Deck of the hopper dredge ship Stuyvesant, photographed while working the Cape Henry Approach Channel to the Baltimore Harbor project on August 5, 2014, near Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.
The ship is named for Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam (the name of the Dutch colony on the island of Manhattan before it was turned over to the United Kingdom in 1664 and renamed New York). The 11,144-cubic-yard hopper dredge was built by Avondale Shipyards of Louisiana in the United States. Its owners were Zapata Corporation of Houston, Texas, USA, and Boskalis Westminster, Inc., of the Netherlands. She launched on November 7, 1981, and was finished in the spring of 1982. Stuyvesant was later sold to General Electric, and in December 2012 was purchased by Dutra Group of the Netherlands. Stuyvesant has worked solely in American coastal waters in the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida peninsula, and the Atlantic coast. |
