Description
English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 17 February 2022, allows us to observe the multiple landslides that have occurred in Petropolis following the catastrophic floods that hit the Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil. To date, the official death toll caused by the torrents of floodwaters and the mudslides which have devastated the city has risen to 117 causalities, and local officials indicate that dozens of people are still missing. Operations to evacuate areas at risk and track down missing people are ongoing. The high-resolution open data provided by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites allows to accurately delineate the extent of a flood and can be used for damage assessment.
