Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dead-nettles and stinging nettles ... sharing a sunny spot on the public footpath > 1257775 which turns off the B1149, leading past the Duelling Stone memorial > 764623 to Perrys Lane > 1257822 in Eastgate, further to the west.

The red dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum) is common throughout much of the British Isles and in most of Europe. Evidence of this plant has been found in Bronze Age deposits, and it seems likely that it was introduced with early agriculture. Red dead-nettles are so-called as they do not sting.

The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has fine hairs on the leaves and stems containing irritating chemicals which are released when the plant comes in contact with the skin. Interestingly, these stinging hairs can also be used to reduce pain in that contact reduces levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body, and interferes with the way the body transmits pain signals. The stinging nettle has a long medicinal history and was used as a diuretic and for treating painful joints in the Middle Ages.
