Description
Nederlands: Enige tijd na Jezus' geboorte verschijnen er wijzen uit het oosten. Zij dienen zich aan bij koning Herodes met de vraag, waar de pasgeboren koning van de Joden te vinden is, want - zeggen zij - "wij hebben zijn ster in het oosten gezien". Herodes schrikt en heel Jeruzalem met hem. Hij is niet een geboren koning, hij heeft het koningschap gekocht. Hij besluit het kind te doden en stuurt de wijzen naar het nabijgelegen plaatsje Bethlehem, want daar moet het kind volgens de heilige boeken geboren zijn. En hij vraagt hen, of ze na afloop terug willen komen, "want dan kan ook ik het hulde gaan brengen". De wijzen aanbidden het kind, maar gewaarschuwd door een engel, dat Herodes het kind wil doden, gaan zij niet meer bij hem langs: zij keren langs een andere weg naar huis terug. Herodes bemerkt dat hij bedrogen is en geeft zijn leger bevel alle kinderen onder de twee jaar in en om Bethelhem te doden. Jozef krijgt een droom waarin een engel hem aanspoort het kind en zijn moeder te nemen en te vluchten naar Egypte. Daar moeten ze blijven tot Herodes gestorven is en het gevaar geweken.
