ate () In Raden Marta Hardjanas Pepakem Sapanti Sakoentala (met Hollandsche vertaling en aanteekeningen vanD. van Hinloopen Labberton; uitgave van Widya Poestaka no. 1) wordt gezegd, dat reeds Dr. Brandes aan-toonde, âdat de oude symbolen (neem b.v. het swastika symbool of het trisjoela symbool) in de een ofandere periode als symbolen worden begrepen en toegepast. Daarna begint de symbolieke waarde haast onher-roepelijk op den achtergrond te geraken, om geheel door de ornamentieve toepassing overwoekerd te worden.De swastikas worden tot meanders, ze dalen af van sjmbool tot den rang van teekenvoorbeeld. En dan, alshet proces bijna voltooid is, en men niet anders verwachten zou, dan dat de symbolen bij verdere ontwikkelingvoor simpele versiering zouden plaats maken, dan komt ineens het oude symbool in volle nuchterheid als sym-bool terug, haast zonder poging, om het tot ornament te verwerken. Uit de Hindoe-Javaansche bouwkunst haaldeDr. Brandes de bewijzen voor deze periodictieit.112
