der figuren verklaren, dat de inslag geïkat moet zijn. Maar bij nadere beschouwing komt men tot de ontdekking, dat zoon saroeng Bèntenan uit drie aan elkaar genaaide kokerdoeken bestaat. En hier kom ik nog eens terug op het bewijs, dat de oorspronkelijke kaiwoes, de smalle, enkelvoudige kokers met geïkatte schering, niet anders dan als kinderdraagslendangs gemaakt zijn, en men er later door aaneennaaiing van 3 zulke kaiwoes er den saroengvorm aan heeft willen geven, om den doek ook tot kleedingstuk voor vrouwen geschikt te maken. Voor die aaneennaaiing toch bestond onder de gegeven omstandigheden geen reden; met het gebruik van de spoel, zooals die in het hoofdstuk over den inslag omschreven is, en welke men zoo lang kan maken, als men wil, kan men vrij breede weefsels maken. Het staat dus vrij wel vast, dat men oorspronkelijk slechts smalle, kokervormige kaiwoes maakte, omdat nu eenmaal de kleeden of kokerdoeken, waarin men kinderen op den rug droeg (en nog draagt), niet breed 272
