van k aj o ep o e 1 a i, terwijl de Ceramsche inboorling van Amahei roet met het melksap van den r i n a o 1 o-boom mengt. Moeilijker is de wijze, waarop de West-Soembanees de zwarte verfstof voor zijn doek ver-vaardigt. Deze wordt n.1. eerst ondergedompeld in het sap van de schors en bladeren van eenboomsoort, genaamd pamoesoe, welk sap niet minder dan 6 uren moet worden uitgekookt.Daarna wordt het stuk geklopte boomschors aan beide zijden met modder besmeerd, opgerolden in modder begraven. Na een half uur haalt men het weder te voorschijn, wascht het inschoon water uit, hangt het in de schaduw te drogen, en herhaalt dan de geheele bewerkingvanaf het onderdompelen, totdat de gewenschte kleur verkregen is. Op dezelfde wijze wordenook voor de zwartkleuring de bladeren van den pak at of van den rosajeji gebruikt, afzon-derlijk of te zamen, of gemengd met de schors en bladeren van den pamoesoe.Andere kleuren dan bruin, rood, geel en zwart worden zelden gebruikt, alleen in de Toradja-246
